We chose our name in reference to the geographic coordinates of Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital located at latitude 9 North and longitude 38 East, which is the starting point of the history of coffee.
This story is about the discovery of the stimulating effects of coffee berries, which led to the creation of one of the most loved drinks around the world.
A story of goats
Legend has it that a shepherd, named Kaldi, noticed the strange behavior of his goats who had eaten red berries and were jumping and frolicking wildly. The shepherd went to a convent to tell about his discovery. A monk proposed making a drink by boiling the stones of these fruits.
As they found that the beverage gave a ardor to those who drank it, it was called Kawa, which means strength, momentum and vitality. Even today, in Switzerland, some of our customers order a kawa from us.
A global expansion
Following its discovery, coffee spread throughout Africa and then began to be cultivated in other parts of the world, including Asia and South America.
Today, coffee is one of the most popular beverages around the world, and is loved for its rich, complex flavors as well as its stimulating effects on the mind and body.
